122 | He was the only child of Pierre Charron, a master rope maker and his mother Judith Martin from the parish of "St-Martin" diocese of Meaux. Pierre was brought up a Calvanist. Meaux was one of the centers of the reform movement in France. Both parents died young. Pierre was orphan at age 17 and might explain why he wished to emigrate to New France. While in Meaux, he practiced the trade of a leather dresser in the Grand Marché . As he prepared to leave for New France, there are several records of sellong property that he no doubt inhereted from his father. On 25 January 1661, he and his step father (Jean Giroust), rented out a house they owned near the Great Market to Jean Guerreau for 105 livre. The following 9 Arpil 1661, he donated another house in the same area to his cousin Nicolas Mansart. At the age of 25, Pierre arrived at Ville-Marie (Montréal) in the autunm of 1661. There were four ships that reached Quebec in late August and September 1661. He was first mentioned in a Montreal record on 2 October 1662 when he and two other settlers agreed to clear four arpents (3.4 acres) of land for the lords of Montreal. Shortly after his arrival, he was enrolled in the 20th escouade (squad) of the brigade of Ste-Famille of Jesus-Marie-Joseph. This military unit was created by Governor M. de Maisonneuvre in January 1663 to protect the colony agianst the Iroquois. He enlisted on 27 Januray 1663 and when his service was up, he began looking for a wife. Since the colony was restricted to Roman Catholics, Pierre and his soon to be bride, Catherine Pillard were confirmed in Cahtolicism in May 1664 at Montreal. Pierre married Catherine on 19 Oct. 1665 in the paroisse Notre-Dame de Montréal. She was confrimed in Montreal on 11 July 1664 under the name Caterine Plate. | Charron Pierre (I2004)
