Mrs. Barbara Klein Dies in Milwaukee

Mrs. Barbara Klein, widow of the late Phillip Klein and a resident of this city practically all her life, died in Milwaukee at noon Monday. Mrs. Klein had been making her home in that city for the past year. About a year ago she suffered a fracture of the hip, which hastened her end.

A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Zweck, she was born in this city, September 26th, 1860. On April 18th, 1895, she was united in marriage with Phillip Klein, who preceded her in death November 21st, 1896 [sic].

Surviving her are two sons, Alfred of Milwaukee and John of this city. Eight grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Theresa Schoenberger of Watertown, S.D.; Michael Zweck of this city; Mrs. Michael Arndorfer of Milwaukee; John V. Zweck of Los Angeles, Calif., and Frank Zweck of this city. She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.

The remains were brought to this city and funeral services will be held at St. Peter's church at 9:00 o'clock Friday morning with interment in St. Peter's cemetery. The services were [sic] conducted by Rev. Theo. Rohner.

Phillip died under mysterious circumstances, and the following article from the Beaver Dam Argus, Friday, November 23, 1906, page 5, seems to intimate that his death was the result of murder.

Sudden Death of Philip Klein.

About 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, the body of Philip Klein, was found at his home on South Center street. His wife and children, went to services at St. Peter's church in the forenoon, and left Mr. Klein at home at work painting the kitchen floor. Upon their return home, they found all the doors of the house securely locked, and not being able to get in Mrs. Klein called upon her brother, John V. Zweck, and they forced an entrance into the house by a side door. They found everything in the house in order, but upon looking into the family bedroom, they found Mr. Klein's body lying upon the bed, with no clothing on it but a handkerchief around his neck. Dr. Herbert F. Prasch was immediately summoned and upon arriving at the house found that life was extinct, and thought that Mr. Klein had been dead for about an hour or two. The body was still warm.

A coroner's jury composed of Joseph F. Mirlach, T. D. Lawrence, C. W. Kelsey, U. O. Shipman, E. E. Hopkins and J. C. Harder was impanelled Monday afternoon, and after viewing the body and surroundings, the hearing was set for Wednesday at 10 a.m. before Justice Miltgen and District Attorney Husting.

After the testimony of the witnesses, including expert testimony of Dr. H. F. Prasch, Dr. G. F. Messer and Dr. R. E. Schoen, the jury brought in the following verdict: "That Philip Klein, deceased, came to his death, by strangulation, by whom done, unknown to the jury."

From the testimony introduced, it was shown that Philip Klein was a good, industrious man, in good health, of a happy disposition, who had a happy married life, and was well liked by all his co-workers and his employers. He was also well liked by all his neighbors, and was free from debt, and is not known to have had any enemies. The last time he was seen alive was when he was working about the storm windows at his home at 10:30 Sunday forenoon.

Philip Klein was born at Hinsweilen, Germany, and was 40 years, 6 months and 14 days of age. He was married to Miss Barbara Zweck in this city on April 18, 1895, who survives him with two sons - John and Alfred. For the past eleven years he has been a trusted employe of the Malleable Iron works; and at the time of his death was in charge of the shipping department.
